1. General

1.1. What is the purpose of this site?

The purpose of this site is to form a grassroots campaign to politely convince Warner Brothers to allow the use of transcribed Friends scripts on non-profit Friends fan sites.

1.2. How does this site accomplish that purpose?

1.3. How can I help?

Call, fax, or write Warner Brothers, and sign the petition. If you run a website, you can help by linking to this page.

1.4. What action prompted the creation of this site?

In late October 2002, Warner Brothers' "anti-piracy" department ordered Eric Aasen to remove the Friends scripts he had painstakingly manually transcribed on the Complete Friends Script Index (CFSI) he had created.

1.5. Are you asking Warner Brothers to give the scripts away?

No. We're only asking that Warner Brothers allow the scripts to be used on non-profit fan sites. We are not asking Warner Brothers to relinquish their rights to these scripts.

1.6. Are you asking Warner Brothers to provide you with copies of the scripts?

No. Eric Aasen (and others) have manually transcribed scripts from most episodes of the Friends. We are only asking Warner Brothers allow non-profit fan sites to use these scripts. We are not asking Warner Brothers to provide anyone with original scripts.

1.7. Can Warner Brothers legally stop people from posting transcribed scripts?

I'm not a lawyer, so I can't answer that, but Warner Brothers' legal department believes they can.

1.8. Why not approach this issue legally?

I'm not sure what the outcome of a legal battle would be, but I'd really try to appeal to Warner Brothers' better nature and consideration for fans. I like to think Warner Brothers will listen to polite reason and will re-consider their position, if enough of us ask nicely.

1.9. How can you appeal to a corporation's "better nature"?

Corporations are composed of people, such as a CEO and a Board of Directors. In addition to wanting to keep their customers happy, these people (just like everyone else) have a conscience and a desire to help others, and I hope they'll see allowing non-profit fan use of these scripts costs them nothing, and brings happiness to others, including their customers.

1.10. What is the full name of this site?

Following the tradition of the show itself, this site is named "The One with the Petition to Ask Warner Brothers (WB) To Allow Use of Friends Scripts on Non-Profit Fan Sites".

1.11. Isn't that a really long name?

Yes.

1.12. Is it "petitionwb.sitesuck.com" or "petitionweb.sitesuck.com"?

It's petitionwb (ie, "petition Warner Brothers"), but petitionweb also works.

1.13. Why not petitionwb.com?

As of this writing (10/27/2002), no one has taken petitionwb.com, but I think there are enough 2nd-level-domains out there already ;)

1.14. Should I send Warner Brothers a nasty letter?

No! Please focus on politely requesting Warner Brothers to allow use of these scripts. Sending a nasty letter will only convince Warner Brothers that Internet Friends fans are boors.

2. Silly

2.1. So, why not just ask the two brothers directly?

Ummm, Joey, we're talking about the company Warner Brothers.

2.2. Yeah, ok, but the two brothers must still be in charge or something, right?

Ummm, Phoebe, I think the original Warner brothers are dead (ohhh, no.)
